In 1990, after an impressive 23-year career with the U.S. Army, a visit to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin with his family triggered an epiphany that changed everything for Andrew Bacevich. An Army Colonel and Vietnam veteran who had made a career of military service, Bacevich was left with the nagging realization that “the truths I had accumulated over the previous twenty years as a professional solider—especially truths about the Cold War and U.S. foreign policy—might not be entirely true.” This uncomfortable realization (and others) led Bacevich to become, over the next twenty years, an astute student of history, and ultimately a teacher and writer—as well as an eloquent and outspoken critic of U.S. foreign and military policy.
